The question for many, I suspect, will be a matter of balancing need with price: do I need the extra features that the much greater price of Pro affords me? Both versions of Freeway make use of templates and actions heavily, so it is imperative that designers have access to a good collection of both in order to build the Web sites they want. Freeway comes stocked with a good start of both, but most Web sites will eventually require more variety than these.
Fortunately, there is a strong community of Freeway users and developers who have provided many templates and actions. The target audience for iWeb is the user who wants a no-fuss, quick-start Web site that makes up in ease of use and publishing what it lacks in features and customization. Freeway can compete there, but I doubt that is who they are targeting—at least with Freeway Pro, and even with Express. Few designers are also deep coders, so offering something for a designer to put alongside Photoshop and InDesign—indeed, that even shares the feel of these applications modestly—is a great market to pursue, allowing the designer to single-handedly see his Web site into live status, without having to outsource the coding and configuration.
As such, I see Freeway much more as an alternative to GoLive or DreamWeaver, and marketed to smaller shops, individual designers, and consultants who want to offer Web development as a small part of their services, but not their exclusive focus. Comparing Freeway to its competitors furthers this inclination. With Freeway, you get a lot more direct access to editing layout, what will eventually be code, and features. Users looking for something that is essentially iWeb with more power will be frustrated with the learning curve of Freeway over something like RapidWeaver.
Freeway, like nearly all Web development applications, uses a proprietary format to store its files—and you have to use one of these to make changes to an existing site. No big deal, except that Freeway cannot import existing Web sites. On a similar note, if you happen to be someone who is skilled with coding, the fact that Freeway generates code on output might be a problem for you. Freeway is an impressive package. I was pleasantly surprised at how powerful it was for producing highly-functional and complex Web sites, and at how the interface deployed like a design tool instead of a programming tool.
Reviewing in ATPM is open to anyone. Download ATPM Software Review by Ed Eubanks Jr. Freeway Pro and Freeway Express 5. Recommended: Mac OS X Trial: Fully-featured 30 days. Freeway Web Site Basics Freeway works like many Web site authoring applications: you create a new site file, and it creates a package of content that contains each page within the site, images and media files, CSS files, and other supporting files. Two Versions Freeway comes in two versions that are quite distinct—if nothing else, by the price difference between them.
And price is VERY reasonable. Ugeorge Jun 24 I was looking for a product to build web pages without having to write html, and this, in my opinion, is the best I have tried, as concerns flexibility, ease of use, control of the final result, and, last but not least, affordable price.
Moreover, when I needed support the response was fast and satisfactory. The only serious remark is the lack of multiple level of undo, I hope that future development of the program will add this feature.
Softpress-Systems Jan 23 Softpress is a company that develops, markets and sells the Freeway family of products. We aim to provide excellent technical support and customer service. We also listen to our users. Our prices for new software are well below what would be expected for the quality of our products and services. We do not regularly demand money for upgrades like many in the industry.
We do however maintain our software and offer free upgrades to sustain older versions of Freeway for extended life spans, as early adopters of both Freeway 3 and Freeway 4 can attest. Last week, to coincide with Macworld and to get feedback from our users, we launched a Beta version of Freeway 5.
In conjunction, we are now offering a free upgrade to 5 for all users that purchase after January 1st, We're very excited about the new features, and we're sure you will be too. Some users who purchased Freeway in the last few months of , including those who have commented here, have expressed their view that we had somehow tricked them into buying when we knew a new version was on the way.
People that purchased here at macZOT! Freeway 5 will not be released until at least March, and that would backdate the free upgrades on release to a minimum of two months, which we believe is fair. Freeway 5 is not yet ready and not for sale. When it is, it will be a wonderful tool for home users and professionals alike. It will empower users and save their precious time. It will be solid and fully-featured, in part because of the users' opportunity to test it and offer feedback.
There will be an announcement about upgrades from version 4 to 5, probably around the release of the second beta. Again, you will see that Softpress does takes care of its users. Until then, please feel encouraged to use the Freeway 5 Beta, enjoy it and let us know what you think. Guest Mar 24 Fantastic product! Produced a great funtioning website without needing to know HTML.
Even optimises the files before downloading. Good support from the developer to issues and good forum support. If you want to create your own website, this is the go.
Point-and-click application. Even comes with templates if you don't want to design your own style. Great value too. Guest Nov 30 This program has tuned into a nightmare. It will no longer save anything I change, although all changes show in Preview.
I changed a series of text graphics - they show in preview but the files themselves have not changed - this is an issue BBEdit cannot correct as they should be converted in Freeway but are NOT being converted. Big mistake buying this program. Show more. Safe download Unsafe download Why check apps.
