There's no reason why it shouldn't bring up the Advanced Boot menu unless, of course, it's a Packard Bell in which case it will offer you disk boot options. If it is a PB and it does that, select the hard disk then immediately hit F8 again. When the system locks up, try Control Shift and Escape together - see if that brings up a Task manager.
